The 70 recorded species of butterflies on Martha’s Vineyard are as diverse as they are charismatic. Drawing on his extensive library of photographs and 20 years of study, Island ecologist Matt Pelikan will introduce these popular insects and discuss their distribution, behavior, identification, and ecology.

Matt Pelikan, Conservation Measures Manager for the Massachusetts Nature Conservancy, has lived year-round in Oak Bluffs since 1997. Fascinated by nature for as long as he can remember, Matt has led or participated in a wide range of wildlife studies and has maintained a detailed checklist of Vineyard butterflies since his arrival on the Island. He is currently working on a study of Vineyard Orthoptera (crickets, katydids, and grasshoppers).
