Approximately half of all of Polly Hill’s named plant introductions are rhododendrons and azaleas so it should come as no surprise that these esteemed shrubs have a commanding presence at the Arboretum. Favorable growing conditions coupled with Polly’s passion, experimentation, and planting of a wide range of them was foundational to rhododendrons being the most widely planted group of shrubs at the Arboretum. Join Tom Clark for an exploration of this rich and diverse collection during which he’ll highlight great selections for Vineyard gardens and offer tips for achieving success.
Tom is the director and curator of the Mount Holyoke College Botanic Garden in South Hadley, MA, and previously curated living collections at Polly Hill Arboretum. A native of Hadley, MA, he holds a B.S. in plant science from UMass and studied at the Threave School of Horticulture and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh. His passion for plants, especially rhododendrons, has led him on plant exploration expeditions to China, Japan, and North America.
