Seasonal Gardener

The Polly Hill Arboretum in West Tisbury is seeking to hire a full-time, seasonal Gardener.  The Arboretum includes 20 acres of plant collections including nearly 3000 unique plants from around the world.  Our mission is to share knowledge of plants and scientific procedure through educational programs, research, plant conservation, and exploration.  The Gardener will assist with horticultural operations, maintaining the plant collections and grounds to the highest standards.

This position will be involved in planting, pruning, weeding, watering, mulching, and other garden related tasks.  There will also be opportunities to work in the greenhouse, be involved in arboriculture projects, participate with restoration of wildflower meadows, and work on developing new garden areas.  Experience gardening and working outdoors is preferred, but more importantly applicants should possess a willingness to learn about plants and horticulture, to work as part of a team, and be comfortable engaging with garden visitors from time to time.  This position requires the ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions, handle tools and small equipment, and the ability to lift 50lbs and perform daily tasks of a physical nature.

Start and end dates are negotiable but ideally will occur during the growing season between April and October.  A full time schedule consists of 35 hours/week, Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 3:30pm.  A complete application will consist of a resume with 3 references, and a cover letter expressing interest in the position.  Questions and applications may be sent to [email protected] with ‘Seasonal Gardener’ in the subject line.  Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.
