The Polly Hill Arboretum is seeking applicants who are students of horticulture or plant science at the college level to participate as horticultural interns in hands-on maintenance and other aspects of collections curation at the Polly Hill Arboretum.
Internships are full time positions and interns work 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. with a one-half hour lunch break; either Tuesday – Saturday or Sunday – Thursday. Interns are encouraged to participate in special events and educational activities beyond this schedule, and are occasionally required to do so.
Internships are for 10 weeks. The start date is flexible, although mid-late May is ideal.
Compensation is $10/hour for a 40 hour week, and housing is provided at The Nature Conservancy’s 90 acre Hoft Farm, which is about four miles from the Arboretum. Other ecology/horticultural interns associated with The Nature Conservancy also live at the Farm, and Arboretum interns will most likely have a roommate.
You will be expected to work on a full variety of tasks at the Arboretum including pruning, weeding, mulching, mowing, edging, trimming, IPM, plant records, plant propagation and greenhouse maintenance. Interns are also expected to work with the public and staff the Visitors' Center one weekend day each week. Interns also give tours and assist with the education program in which they are encouraged to participate. Interns also design and complete a special project (we have suggestions available). No international applications accepted.
To apply for an internship for the summer of 2008 please send a resumé with a list of three references and a letter explaining why you are interested in our program by March 1st, 2008 to:
