Join Arboretum staff to learn more about these wonderful plants and how Polly’s persistence in obtaining hardy specimens resulted in the display we enjoy today. Description: We welcome back Sheriffs Meadow Director of Stewardship, Kristen Fauteux, and Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank ecologist, Julie Russell, for another in-depth study of Island plants and their habitats. Join them on another adventure into the wild, wet, woods and wetlands of the Vineyard, this time in search of ferns. Learn to identify and discover the biology of ferns in this 2 day workshop. We begin Thursday with a half day class at PHA then head into the field to find some ferns. Friday we continue our field exploration. $90/$70 for PHA members, $50 for professionals associated with Island land management or conservation organizations. Description: Develop the confidence and skill to render the wonders of the natural world with artist, illustrator, and nature enthusiast Genevieve Jacobs. Using simple materials and techniques, participants will throw caution to the wind and learn skills and principles which will allow the inner artist to emerge! Develop personal style while learning about materials and mark-making, perspective, value, and the art of accurate observation. Subject matter may run the gamut from bugs and leaves to landscape vistas. Start a nature journal, further develop your sketches, or simply spend productive time in a beautiful outdoor setting. Basic materials will be available. Call to pre-register and for supply list. $25/$20 for PHA members. $20/$15 per class for 2 or more sessions.

Description: Dawn redwood, dove tree, and franklinia are just a handful of the trees growing at the Arboretum with engaging stories of how they secured a place in gardens and in the history of plant exploration. If our trees could talk, they might share accounts of faraway forests, botanical adventures, and intrepid plant explorers. Join PHA curator Tom Clark on a walking tour of the Arboretum where he will reveal some of the fascinating stories behind these and other beloved plants.

Description: Down dirt roads and hidden behind stone walls are some spectacular Vineyard gardens; join us for this special tour to visit a few. We will focus on Chilmark gardens with lunch included at the Beach Plum Inn, transportation provided as well. $145/$110 for PHA members. Non member price includes Individual membership at the Arboretum.

Description: Late summer and early fall is a perfect time to plant. Join us for our end-of-the-season plant sale. Arboretum staff will be on hand to answer questions and offer advice. We have chosen trees, shrubs, and perennials, including many Island natives which are suitable for our Vineyard climate.

In addition landscape designer Theresa Sprague will present an afternoon talk on creating a meadow and lawn alternatives.

Description: Join Sheila Brady principal of Oehme van Sweden landscape architects to learn about her recent design project at the New York Botanical Garden. This new Native Plant Garden highlights the beauty, diversity and cultural significance of native plants and showcases the Garden’s commitment to education and conservation. In this talk, Brady will illustrate the diversity of native plants used in the garden, the selection and enhancement of patterns from nature and the resultant design that engages and inspires visitors to learn more about natural ecosystems and native plants that are suitable throughout the Northeast.  Brady has designed many large-scale public projects in addition to her award winning private gardens.
